Finding Quality Childcare

Written by: Kelly Crowe

One of the most difficult, but most important, things you’ll do as a parent is determining who will care for your child while you are at work.

There are many options available including childcare centers, family home daycare, relative care, or hiring someone to come to your home. Once you have decided which option will work best for your family, you can begin to narrow your search by starting with some practical questions, such as cost, location, and hours.

You will also want to consider philosophy and values. Are you looking for academic preparation or nurturing care? Do you have specific religious values you would like taught? Does your child have special physical or dietary needs? Although you may not find a place that replicates your family life exactly, it is important that there be harmony and consistency on the main issues.

All states have laws regulating child care; however, regulations set only minimum standards. Familiarize yourself with the standards in your area before you visit. Look for more than the minimum. Does it look and smell clean? Do the children appear happy and well-cared for? What is the ratio of children to caregivers? Do the caregivers appear happy and seem to enjoy being with the children? What is the staff turnover rate? Consistency in caregivers is extremely important to the development of young children.

These are just a very few of the questions it is important to ask. Make a list of the things that are important to your family – and remember to trust your instincts! No one knows your child and your family’s needs as well as you do. Put the effort into finding the best care you can, don’t compromise on quality, and you may find a wonderful partnership with a caregiver who will be a part of your family’s life for years to come.
